My project focuses on developing and applying new protocols to image antimicrobial peptides such as bacteriocins and how they interact with the bacterial membranes. These new methods of visualisation will combine atomic force microscopy (AFM) with various super-resolution techniques and single molecule imaging in order to gain a deeper understanding of the complex mechanisms underlying bacterial membrane disruption and bacterial killing by bacteriocins.
In the age of growing antibacterial resistance, a lot of the mechanisms behind it remain unknown. It is therefore, important to find new ways to get better insights into the bacterial envelope and understanding of how the antibiotic resistance arises and how we can adapt and modify the already available antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides to better fight resistant strains.
