Corrin Blake is a Master of Chemistry graduate from the University of St Andrews. Now part of the ACM CDT and based at the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN), she is carrying out a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Bart Hoogenboom, in collaboration with Dr Luke Clifton of ISIS neutron and muon source.
Her project is focused on the design and development of novel model membranes of the gram-negative bacterial outer membrane. Model membranes serve as tunable and controllable platforms to investigate the role of bacterial outer membrane structure in their ability to acquire resistance to antibiotics. She uses atomic force microscopy at the LCN, and neutron reflectometry at ISIS to characterise the model membranes. The ultimate goal of this research is to provide greater insights into how antibiotics interact with the gram-negative outer membrane, in order to guide the development of more effective antibiotics. |
