Christian Bortolini
Christian is a Research Fellow in Bart’s group. He holds a PhD in Nanoscience from Aarhus University (Denmark) and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (China). He is interested in applying biophysical tools to solve biological problems at the nanoscale. Christian was awarded an individual Postdoctoral fellowship from the Lundbeck Foundation to work on amyloid self-assembly; during this time, he discovered a new material capable of growing to mm scale in hundreds of seconds by assembling into highly ordered amyloid crystals. His current research focusses on the biophysics of bacterial killing by the immune system: he uses advanced microscopy techniques to decipher the mechanisms behind antibacterial attack, in particular how the membrane attack complex assembles on live bacteria and kills them.
